What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a complimentary and alternative therapy which addresses the principle that there are reflexes in the feet relative to each and every organ and all parts of the body. Reflexology treatment is a gentle, non-invasive, holistic therapy which is based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet correspond to every organ, gland and part of the body. It is a whole body treatment - not just a foot massage.

In a reflexology treatment, pressure is exerted on these reflexes by the thumbs and fingers, combining this with massage, relaxation and joint mobiliSATion techniques. The result is an internal balance in the body.

A brief history of Reflexology

The art of reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China, this therapy was not introduced to the West until Dr William Fitzgerald developed 'Zone therapy'. He believed that reflex areas on the feet and hands were linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zone.

In the 1930's, Eunice Ingham further developed this zone theory into what is known as reflexology. Her opinion was that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.

Balance your 'Yin and Yang'

Chinese doctors believe that our bodies are composed of the opposing forces of Yin and Yang that need to work in harmony for us to achieve health and vitality. In Chinese medicine, reflexology works on a similar principle to acupuncture where the body is divided into 12 pairs of energy zones (Meridians),

Chinese practitioners believe that when these energy channels become blocked a person feels unwell. Both reflexology and acupuncture aim to dissolve any blockages causing ill-health by encouraging the free flow of vital energy through the body.

Whilst acupuncture focuses on points along the Meridians, situated all over the body, and stimulates them with needles, reflexology focuses on the Meridians in the feet and works on them with finger pressures and is useful for people with needle phobias.

Should I have Reflexology?

There have been numerous research studies looking into reflexology and its effectiveness for treating a wide range of medical conditions. Generally speaking the results are very positive and show that reflexology could help both the physical as well as the emotional level.

Reflexology can assist in conditions such as: Allergies, Arthritis, Asthma, Back Problems, Blood Pressure, Bowel Disorders, Gynecological Disorders, Insomnia, Multiple Sclerosis, Neck Problems, Hormonal Problems, Sinusitis and Stress Disorders.
